Extend enterprise goals by expecting commitment

Being a romantic, I wanted to treat my beloved to a special meal at our nearby restaurant. We had been there previously, and although they didn't know us too well , they would recognise us by sight.

I called up for an early evening table (since we like to move on to other things) and was greeted by an amiable lady who, by her voice, may have been of Italian extraction. I asked for 10:00. on the subsequent Friday, and she said 'that will be fine', but didn't ask who I was.

I enquired if she wanted my name and a cell phone number to reserve the booking, but she said no, telling me that at they don't take reservations that early in the evening because it wouldn't be busy.

In the event, when we turned up, you guessed it, they had a party in and while the evening wasn't spoilt it definitely took a downturn. It was sad to have to be firmly insistent, and after an interval and a libation at the bar we did make that dinner date, although it wasn't what the two of us expected.

What went wrong? Well I went wrong when I didn't ensure that I got the reservation before I rang off. I didn't get commitment.

Chatting to a business owner, the other day, it became evident to me that he was afflicted by the same dilemma. He had become used to asking his development team 'How's it going' in a easy going way, because he felt that it conveyed unity and trust.

In fact he generally heard 'fine, its going great', which he believed to be just that. Of course it wasn't really fine, and in fact he experienced delays and software problems that he hadn't planned for, giving him insomnia and financial problems as the development resources were dissipated.

If developers and their managers aren't asked directly explicitly what the project state is, then human nature decrees an answer that aligns with the question (read fuzzy).

So rather than stopping at the phrase 'how's it going', why not press on until you get a firm commitment.

‘how are things?'

'When will it be tested?'

'That's the 20th August?'

'And you will have finished development and testing?'

'All the bugs will be dealt with?'

'You are committed to this plan?'

Even if part of the answers you get are not exactly what you want, you will be in a much better state to handle the situation than if you just accepted their imprecise replies.

To get commitment plan to request it. Ensure that you don't accept an indefinite reply and keep enquiring until you have absolute confirmation.

If you fail to get commitment at every phase of your endeavour you leave everything to luck. By asking courteously but constantly for a clear and unambiguous reply to your request you will avoid the catastrophe that compresses into a concertina at the end of the project.
